A South Dakota brew is hard to find. A South Dakota beer with ingredients grown in the state is even harder to find. But, Gandy Dancer Brewery has something new on tap, an India Pale Ale from the soil of South Dakota.

Gandy Dancer Brew Works, located inside Monks House of Ale Repute in Sioux Falls, introduced its first beers on Aug. 27, 2013.

Below is a write-up of the handout they made available, introducing the first beers off the line for the release party. Full pints were sold for $4 dollars each while a special “flight” consisting of all four Gandy Dancer original beers went for $6 dollars. The pints will continue to be priced at $4 dollars, as I’m told by Jerry Hauck, Monks owner.

Gandy Dancer Brew Works Release Party

Welcome to Gandy Dancer Brew Works and to Monks House of Ale Repute. We are proud to server our first Gandy Dancer brews, all four of which have been brewed with the Sioux Falls home brewer who provided their recipe and assisted with the brewing process. Please enjoy our original beers!

About Our Name

Because of our proximity to the Sioux Falls rail yards, we have adopted a railroad theme for our emerging brewery. A Gandy Dancer was a typical railroad laborer, and in particular those who laid the track with the rhythmic swing of their spike hammers.

First beers off the line:

1. Throttle Jerker Red Ale - Brewers are Rafe Christopherson and Perry Volden. (A Throttle jerker is a railroad engineer.)

2. Shoo-fly Brown Ale - Brewers are Ryan Jannsen and Perry Volden. (A shoo-fly is a temporary track built around an obstacle, i.e. a flooded area, train wreck, mud slide, etc.)

3. Straw Boss German Wheet - Brewers are Johnny Berkness and Perry Volden. (A straw boss is the supervisor for a small group of railroad laborers, i.e. a group of gandy dancers.)

4. Possum Belly Pale Ale - Brewers are Mike Nussbaum and Perry Volden. (A possum belly is the tool box attached to the underside of a caboose or other railroad car.)

Monks House of Ale Repute owner Jerry Hauck is all about B-Y-O-B — brew your own beer.

The one-barrel nanobrewery is capable of producing 32 gallons of beer per session, and is relying on local home brewers and guest professional brewers to bring a mix of recipes to the Sioux Falls business.

“As far as I know, our concept to feature guest brewers is unique. It gives us the chance to showcase local home brewers and promote a local product,” Hauck said.
